Here I found lots of inspiration using comic book covers from the '30s onwards.
You need to sift and search, but there's a cross reference to the artists when you find a suitable subject.

I've discovered Death Squadron of the RFC flying red Camels with full insignia, black noses and skulls/crossbones on the fuselage!!
Lots of others too.
