Whiffie Nominations are Closed

IN essence, Mr Howling Mouse, what could be called a 'Best Of' thread - not nessecarily a whiffy nomination thread, but a place to put the best things you have seen. I still think the whiffy nomination process needs to be kept secret, so not calling it 'whiffy nominations' would be a good idea. Having a 'Best of' thread would ALSO be a great idea. IN fact, it'd almost be an idea to have a monthly round up best of article posted on the home page based on what has appeared in the thread so far that month...
There are no good kits, bad kits or grail kits, just kitbash fodder.

I started a similar thread for the 2008 nominations to help people.
http://www.whatifmodelers.com/index.php/topic,22480.0.html

It had a few looks and a few others post (besides me).

I have no problem with starting a new thread in a similar vein for 2009 (after I get the voting done, don't want to confuse anyone, especially me).  Whether we call it Whiffie Hopefuls or something else (Best of is another possibility).  Not sure how the Staff would feel about a thread running all year gathering info that is already posted someplace else (space can be an issue).  Also would prefer to keep it in the Whiffie Child Board area but that didn't seem to get noticed as much.

The one thing that bugs me a little is the mention of not enough time to go through the forum looking for items to nominate.  I did make the suggestion for the Whiffies back in July which means people could have been thinking about them for almost half the year.  I posted the sneak peak to the categories on Nov. 29th, over a month before the nomination process started.  I then took suggestions and modifies/added categories (which turned out to be a good thing for aircraft, not so great for figures.  I agree trying to go through the whole forum in 2 weeks is asking too much but a month and a half plus would have made it a lot more manageable.

The other thing that surprised me was the lack of nominations for Most helpful Modeler and Most Improved (only 1 nomination other than my own).  One thing I love about this forum is the way we step up to help other members out.  Whether it is sending a set of decals or a part to someone, offering suggestions on ideas, creating a profile that interests someone else, buying a kit or two to help thin a stash, etc.  This category was  not supported as much as I expected.  Will have to rethink those 2 (and a few others) for 2009.

If the Staff is OK with a thread running all year, I will post it up.  But it will be another week or two as going through the nominations to get the final list and tracking down links to the ones not already supplied is taking a little longer than I expected (course, real world stuff keeps getting in the way including major layoffs at my company this week.  I wasn't affected, yet, but still makes dealing with current projects that much more fun).

Any other thoughts?  Always open to feedback.

You're right, Phil: advance notice was provided but (like most on here, apparently), I did not make a mental note to keep the potential nominees in a list complete with a link, etc.  That's why I think/hope the "Best Of" or "Whiffer's Choice" thread would help as we progress through the year.  As for the lack of nominations in some categories, that could be a sign of there being simply too many categories.  My suggestion would be to start very focused with maybe four or five basic "best of" categories and let it grow from there.

But it's just a suggestion and I'm not even wearing pants right now!!

P.S. "Best T-Tail" would naturally be a mandatory category, right?

This was the biggest problem for me - there was too much this first time.

I will add it to the list along with best zwilling.  Course, I thought the Raspberry Ripple was a natural but there were only 2 builds nominated so maybe, that was all that were actually built last year.

As for size, I wanted something up there with the Emmy's, Oscar's, etc (again, mainly for kicks).  I guess a little too grandiose for a first try.  Will be seriously thinking of resizing for 2009 if I do it again.  Also lost my helpers this year.  Still not sure what happened there but assume Real World got in the way as it has a tendency to do.

Haven't heard anything back from the Staff as to having a continuous thread hosted for this year.
