My only progress so far has been buying the models, test-measuring and doing some MSPaintbashing. I'm interested in your thoughts, as I haven't carried any of these to any sort of conclusion. Is stealing some MiG-23 parts cheating?

HUGE SOVIET FENCES are, naturally, not yet shown.

Howdy Howedar - welcome aboard!

My twopenn'th: I like the front end, but not the back end. Why not just stick the Flogger dorsal fin, ventral fin and jet nozzle on the Skyray's standard back end?

One other suggestion: instead of Lavochkin, why not make it a Cheranovsky product, since some of their BiCh-series aircraft proposals were very Skyrayish (and it gives you the chance to use the cool acronym too, of course...)?

I'm certainly game for the latter. As to the former... I dunno, I think it'd end up too stinking long, especially with the nasty aerodynamic coupling between a wing and horizontal stabilizer only a few feet apart. The 45ish-deg angled stabilizers give more vertical area than the F4D originally had, as well as an additional pitch control surface that the Skyray lacked. From a building point of view, the MiG-23 fuselage grows pretty fast moving forward from the nozzle, and I think blending would be a serious challenge if I used too much of the MiG's aft fuselage. Besides, I want this to be a Skyray with an extra vestigial fin, not a MiG-23 with a delta wing.

I will ponder this, though. Certainly the arrangement I've shown wouldn't be ideal from a scratch-build point of view... but scratchbuilding introduces its own challenges ;)

Howedar, you are not stealing MiG-23 parts, you are just stealing parts from a bad mold Mirage F-1

This will be cool   Perhaps it could use some F-105 intakes?

He he he...Fungus...great name!...:D
It's a big, wide world out there...so if it's all the same to you I'll just stay indoors!

The concept has been refined. Everything held together with tape right now. I expect I'll need to enlarge the inlets. The horizontal tails will be blended into the F4D's wing root.

Oh yeah - that looks mean.....

I nearly suggested putting the Flogger tailplanes on the Ford's wingtips...

It's actually less "Cheranovskyish" now though, with a conventional tailplane - maybe back to Lavochkin after all?

Comrade Howedarski,

Your design is an example of true glorious socialist thinking.  Your design will definitely strike fear into the hearts of the running capitalist dogs!!!  More vodka for you!!!

And kills whatever else grows on you. But it certainly has that weird faux-exotic Soviet look to it!

No updates, unfortunately. Life has been crazy, but the project is still on track for an on-time completion.
