This subject is HUGE, Cobra and references/photos/websites are everywhere. I would start here:

www.acig.org

and then go on to Wings Pallette - It's a Russian site and the images take a wee while to load up but there's hundreds of profiles there. What you need to remember is this. In the late seventies when tactical camouflage began to abe applied, those units responsible were given buckets of paint, colours appropriate for their geographical area, and told to paint their aircraft in either 50/50 or 30/30/40 or whatever percentage deemed 'correct' by the Central Standards Bureau and that was it !

OK, there may have been more in the way of technical instruction, but not much.

I know I sound flippant and maybe even dismissive - I don't mean to - perhaps browsing MiG 21 or Su22 in the search box over at www.airliners.net will give you some idea of the sheer scale of the question you have asked.

Za rodina !

What particular aircraft are you looking at - we may be able to offer some good suggestions?

I would also go to

www.primeportal.net

There are quite a few walkarounds of Soviet/Russian aircraft in there that will show you a wide variety of schemes.

The Soviet, and later Russian, air forces didn't really seem to have a standard camo scheme. They really experimented a lot and some of the schemes were one offs or very limited in use.

Don Color is good for patterns & colours.  The listing for modern Russian aircraft isn't that big, but it should give you some ideas as well as the Soviet colour palette.

Wings Palette has thousands of aircraft profiles.  Click on the aircraft type from the era you want, then on the aircraft type.  It'll then give you a list of nations that used the aircraft, click on the one you want.  If you've got a slow weblink it can be frustatingly slow.  It's also a little tempramental, if your selection takes ages to load, click it again & it usually works okay.  It's worth putting up with, you'll finds dozens of Soviet camouflage patterns.

IPMS Stockholm's 'Urban's Colour Reference Charts' are useful for translating nations colours into manufacturers paint.  It's not perfect, but it's a good starting point as colour matching can be a minefield.

I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.
