Sorry Toad,

techyneckycal diffyculties eh!

Should be OK now.  Here is a picture of Creed's supposed Sea drome

WeeJimmy

No one really took Creed seriously, until Geoffry Pyke added the notion of building the structures out of ice instead of steel.  The idea was finally pushed through to Winston in '42.  Then at Patricia Lake, near Jasper, Alberta and on Lake Louise, actual small scale prototypes of ice islands were built.

The picture below looks just like a shack but its situated on an Alberta lake.  Behind those walls was one of the most clearly guarded secrets of the war, Operation Habakkuk.

WeeJimmy

One last one.

This is a picture of the blocks of ice mixed with wood pulp.  The project was abandoned when the "islands" were priced as high as normal aircraft carriers.  Not to mention the RCAF Ferry Command had developed a staging route by way of Gander, Greenland and Iceland which worked well.  Also of course the range of aircraft were extended making the hop easier.

Furashita's Fleet ( I forget the www bit) is worth a look. It has a picture of the Habbakuk carrier and lots of other fun ships for the RN and other navies.
FAS Militay Analysis is another good site, with a lot on floating island bases and US carriers, though the links do not always work

Neat idea, tho !

Thanx a lot WeeJimmy!!!!

These are the iceberg aircraft carrier I saw when I whas a child! I was incapable to believe in it as a real engineering project.

I'll keep it for my archives of unbuilt projects as a treasure.

I have found this article in Popular Mecanics

http://popularmechanics.com/science/transp.../2/city_at_sea/

I think this could be the very ultimate mega-carrier

Freedom Ship

Hi Antonio

This the ship your thinking of, as i've seen bits on it in the Super Structure's program on the Discovery Channel.

I imagine this probably developed from the USN ideas about floating bases, but they would make an interesting floating base and would probably take a Kirov to damage her !!!!

Cheers

WoW!! Thanks for the link Geoff

I have saved it all to my Hard Disk. I agree with you, it seems the latest derivative from all we have seen here at the Forum.  This early concept shares a similar shape with  the iceberg aircraft carrier.

A military version would be only vulnerable to nuclear weapons but it cost as much as the VI Fleet. :o. This is the reason US Navy rejected the Sea Base project. Anyway the capability for power projection from the sea to other countries is amazing and maybe will be considered in the future. I think it is not a dead concept.

About the civilian version I think It would be amazing to see from my home this Freedom Ship cruising in the Mediterranean. :P

I think my CF-122 with a Kh-22 'Vinson Killer' could take care of it !
