ElectrikBlue's drawing of a Scifi F-20 got me thinking (always a scary thing) that if you took an F-20, move the engine to the base of the tail and add two more on the sides, shorten the fuselage by removing the section between the cockpit and tail, it would kind of look like the original Battlestar Viper.

There have been a couple other builds here that could qualify.

So, what else can you convert to get a space fighter?

There are no good kits, bad kits or grail kits, just kitbash fodder.

Hopefully everyone remembers that the F-14 Tomcat has already been done (Macross or Robotech)

I would think just as well, that some of the awesome nosebreathers out there, like the MiG-21 and Su-22, are naturals for the spaceship conversion charts.

I found this one in photos posted from a model show a couple of years ago on SSM.

It looks like it's got bits of an F-14 and maybe a MiG-29.

Also looks to me like one of the bad guy fighters from Buck Rogers (not the Draconian marauder, one of the others), think it's called a cobra fighter or something.

It's called a "Cabra Macho" (male goat) made by a very industrious Brazilian scifi modeler whose name escapes me right now.

An armor guy, who builds airplanes almost exclusively, that he converts to space fighters-- all while admiring ship models.

Here's what I was thinking of - scroll down past the Thunder fighter to the pirate/mercenary fighter.
Buck Rogers ships
Looks F-14 based to me.
For a while you could buy a kit of this machine (from Spacemam I think, one of the resin kit makers anyway). There's a good built one by Alfred Wong on the Starship Modeler gallery pages.

Upside down F-14 with a Hueycobra front end.

Oddly enough, I was just contemplating doing something similar with Italeri's "fantasy" tandem-seat Hokum and some or other Russian jet.
