FAR148

Hello everybody,
Well my IAF A-10I "Chazir" is done(pics coming soon!) and I would like some help on what I should build next. Their are all 1/48 scale and I have everything I need to build each of them but one. Here's the list of projects, kits used, resin stuff as well as what I'm going to do to them.

1) JASDF ES-3J (profile by Sentinel Chicken aka J.P. Santiago)

A straight foward build. AMT/Ertl kit custom decals and paint.

2) USN Su-27UB

This would be a long term project. Academy's Su-27UB, recast of Sol resin shoulder and canards, new nose gear, resin GE nozzles, resin seats and folding wings. Which I would scratch build.

Hellenic OA-4M

This is going to be a fun little project. Monogram's OA-4M kit, would rescribe the kit, resin targeting pod, resin seats, two GBU-12 and custom decals and paint.

IAF Rafale (profile by David W Aungst)

Another straight forward build. Revell kit, maybe get wolfpack flap set, some custom decal and paint.

USAF F-8 Wild Weasel

Another fun project. Monogram kit, kit would be rescribed, resin seat, resin ECM pods, resin chaff/flare boxes, kit bash HARM and Standard launchers, custom decals and paint.

USAF Wyvern (profile by Sentinel Chicken aka J.P. Santiago)

This just looks some flipping sweet.I would have to buy a kit and I think trumper is the only company that offer it in 1/48 scale. As you may or may not notice, some of the project use older kits. What can I say, I'm cheap when it come to kits. Not too thrilled about about shelling out $60 plus for a kit but still planning to build.

JASDF F-15EJ (profile by Trigger)

This would be the second project inspired by Trigger. His "What-If" A-10 profiles inspired me to build my IAF A-10I. Another straight foward build. Would use Revell's wonderful F-15E kit, resin seats, custom decals and paint.

JASDF F-105J

Another long term project due to complex panel lines that would be rescribed. Monogram kit, resin seats, new afterburner nozzle, new redesigned intakes, new airbrakes and open bomb bay.( not shown on profile) custom decals and paint.

I will build each of them, but what to do next?

Try not. Do. Or do not. There is no try.

My vote was also for the OA-4M.

It was quite a tough decision, though. I really like your F-105J.  That would look very cool. The Rafale would look very nice alongside the Chazir, the Su-27..., the F-8...., the Wyvern. I really hope you'll get round to building them all.
Cheers,
Moritz

Must, then, my projects bend to the iron yoke of a mechanical system? Is my soaring spirit to be chained down to the snail's pace of matter?

I voted for the Rafale because it was the nicest ;D

Pencil me up for the ES-3J first with the OA-4M a close second.

I'm on for the OA-4M, the F-15EJ would be cool as well, could go for broke and make it the -15SEJ with the weapons bays in the tanks and such.

I liked the Su-27UB until I saw the markings, I've developed this dislike for the Rogers markings.

I sort of agree, I don't quite understand the appeal of Jolly Rogers' markings myself. Always liked the Sundowners' and Grim Reapers' markings much better.

But, to each their own, build it as you'll be happy with it.

The appeal? Would you rather have a boring old all-light-grey tail?

Well of course not, it's just that the Jolly Rogers' get quite overdone by modelers. I know the Sundowners also get a lot of attention but then they have a serious splash of colour to break up the grey.

Mind you, I wonder if our original poster does go with the Flanker if they would consider going for a retro high vis glossy USN scheme as the Tomcats wore when they entered service?

Indeed, the original hi-vis Tomcat scheme with light grey surfaces, white control surfaces, red bits in between things that are normally covered, white belly and colourful jolly rogers markings would be cool

Thanks for all the votes

As for the USN Flanker scheme, it would be a low vis bird. My thinking is "What if" the USN picked the Flanker and not the Super Hornet to replace it's Tomcats.

It'd still be the Rogers.  I don't mind the coloured tails, it's the fact that Rogers markings turn up Everywhere.  They're overdone to the point of Cliche.

You have several choices for the Westland Wyvern in 1/48th scale.  Most recently it has been the two Wyvern kits from Trumpeter.  These are #2820 Wyvern S.4 (Late) and #2843 Wyvern S.4 (Early). Both are still available and while expensive, they are certainly cheaper than the Classic Airframes kit and on the plus side there are many more features and details provided in the kits.  Then there is the Classic Airframes #491 which is more expensive than the Trumpeter kits.  Last but not least, are two vacuform kits of the Wyvern from Dynavector and ID Models.  I have no kit numbers for these two models but if you really want to subject yourself to the experience of building a vacuform kit I am sure someone can help you out with the details.

The CA Wyvern is not uncommon at model shows and swaps for $20 to $25 bucks and Dynavector vacuforms
are not are yer average Vacform, they are actually not much more involved than a limited run injected kit.
Truthfully they are actually better than many limited run kits (including Special Hobby, Czech Model, MPM and CA)
as the parts look and fit better without the asymmetry found in some manufacturers products (yes, you FM and Mach 2).
Ask Terry Moore how much putty he used on his Dynavector Skyshark.
ID on the other hand are crap.

With 21.6% of the votes, the USN Su-27UB will be the next FAR conversion.

Thanks for voting,
