ALARM (Air Launched Anti-Radiation Missile)

I have to agree - the ALARM was always a favourite of mine.  I believe the RAAF did actually consider it a few years back (along with HARM) for the F/A-18s, F-111s and AP-3Cs but in the end decided against any missile at all (the saga of RAAF missile acquisitions is a sorry one.).

Just looking at the F-111, can you imagine the potential load out (say when compared to the Tornado pic below):



Alternatively, it is so small that it could even be added as a defensive missile just like AIM-9s on a side pylon.

It's one of the coolest-looking missiles around, IMO. I would certainly hope that British F-35s will carry it, given it's effectiveness.

Fascinating thing, the ALAARM.

I saw them 'fire' one in the simulator at Lossiemouth once. It was in loiter mode and right after launch it tipped nose up and screeched away in front of the Tonka vertically. Impressive rate of climb for sure.

It has a very small diameter but it's quite a long missile, even longer than the Tonka's Sea Eagle and that's saying something!

I'm planning on putting a couple of these on my Eagle GR.7 I'm building (see my thread in the TRS2 board) but I wasn't sure they would fit into the timeline I'm thinking about.  This has confirmed that it would just be right (just being the optimum word) so thanks for this timely update.

So what's the planned replacement for the ALAARM? There must be something, or are they doing the same thing as they did with the FAA SHARs and throw the entire capability in the bin?

It seems it's still in service (still listed on the RAF website).

The plan was to replace it with the Diehl/BGT Armiger, a weapon that would be based on the Meteor airframe. But that has been cancelled.

Food for thought, but who saids it has to be strictly for makin SAM sites go boom? One could stick a dual mode passive/active radar seeker (or even IR) & use it as an BVRAAM.

That would make for one hell of a Wild Weasel! A B-1 could carry an enormous number of ALARMs, and could completely swamp an area with loitering missiles.

Shasper: An interesting idea. The ALARM isn't as fast as air-to-air missiles, though, so it wouldn't be ideal. I'm also not sure it's designed to be particularly agile, so against a manoeuvring target it would struggle.

True, I was thinking of it being used as an anti-AWACs or even anti-Bomber/Patrol aircraft (ie, planes that dont move real fast), now if you added thrust vectoring & the ramjet engine of the Meteor then maybe its agility would go up a notch?

Possible, certainly! Maybe fit the seeker and loiter capability into a modified Meteor airframe?
