Here's probably my favorite conversions of the Apollo 27, by Professor Bobo on SSM:

(the model on the left is a Leif Ericson/UFO. A kit of which I have some passing knowledge)

Nice stuff Frank.

I have been thinking of picking one up and skinning the fins but no further ideas as to what to do next.

Did you see that the Lief (in its UFO disguise) is a planned rerelease this year?  I will be picking up one of them.

If I use the "fins" on the Apollo 27 kit, they'll either be skinned or replaced by scratch built wings. It's probably the weakest design element in the kit.

The UFO should be cool when it gets re-released. The pictures of the mold show that most of the engine parts are still around, except for the clear bits. I made molds of the engines in my Leif Ericson and cast them in clear.

Federation Models makes resin engine replacement parts for the Lief Erickson for those that want to include them in your builds . Go to products

then scroll down to the second listing. They go for around $10.00 US.
