Why were Mitsubishi G4M2 "Betty" bombers orange?

I'm by no means an expert on things Japanese but this colour seems rather strange.

Usually they weren't... If you meant this:

- than it's a prototype of G4M3 version (concretely, a third one) undergoing tests in Yokosuka IJN research center. The trainers and prototypes in Japan were orange, or with orange lower surfaces (as in Britain, but orange instead of yellow).
