I was just looking through a USB stick i keep work stuff on which was about the last place i expected to see a "sand and spinach" type scheme

it's actually the microstructure of the heat affected zone of some CMV pipework in a powerstation (a fillet weld had to be removed and this was what the metal underneath looked like after suitable etching.  scale bars in the image are 100micron, 0.1mm .
