strange Russian carrier aircraft !?!?!

In the latest AIR International is a one-page article regarding the issue "Indian Navy buys the Admiral Gorshkov" !!! together with model pictures "before" and "after" the conversion.

Nothing really new ... but a closer look an the original configuration shows that there seems to be two different planes aboard the A.G.  ... one very slim – the Yak-38 - .... and one little larger and more bulky, esp. the air intake looks different !!!

Here are five pictures scanned from the page 15. The first showing both types in comparison and picture 2 + 3 show different enlarged details !

Any comments or more information ??

Hey ... just a few moments and I got my first information from "Arthur" (key-forum:

But for my opinion .... <_< ...  I think it seems unlikely to “embark” two – I would say competing designs the Yak-36 (serial version) and the Yak-36M/-38 – in the same air-wing until they are still in development !

Or .... ??? Maybe the Yak-36 (serial version) was more specialised for the air-to-ground-role and the Yak-36M/-38 for the air-to-air-role ... or vice versa !!???

The AIAA book on the development of Russian V/STOL has an intermediate step between the Yak-36 and Yak-36M/Yak-38 that has the engines and tail of the Yak-36 with the wings, inlets, and nose of the Yak-36M.  A most interesting looking aircraft.

PS.  The side view from "Arthur" doesn't quite match what's on the model.  It doesn't have the lerx and has the original wing shape whereas the aircraft on the model seems to have the same wing planform as the Yak-36M.
