Fw 189 schnellbomber

I wanted to make a schnellbomber from a Focke-Wulf Fw189, so I'm making a few changes.

Most obvious is the two Junkers Jumo 004s under the wing in nacelles outside of the booms. The Argus As 410 are to be replaced by 4x20mm cannon in streamlined fairings while there will be 2x 40mm cannon in the wing roots. The bomb load is to be mounted on the underside of the fuselage.

The crew had been reduced to two, with a solid rear gondola for extra fuel while, the only gunner will be the dorsal gunner. The amount of glazing will obviously need to be reduced at the front of the aircraft, although not to the extent of the Fw 189C.

I'm hoping when I get the pieces together this will be my first post in the current and finished projects. What do people think?

Cheers,
James

Sounds good.  Looking forward to the pictures.

We don't just embrace insanity here.  We feel it up, french kiss it and then buy it a drink.

Sounds cool! I'm building a Fw189 at the moment, as a ground attack machine for the Spanish Civil War GB. I'm adding 20mm gun pods from a Bf109, some bombs from a Bf110, and some improvised armour plates over some of the glazing to protect the crew.

What kit are you using as a basis? I'm using the Revell one, which seems like it's a re-box of a short-run kit (Special Hobby, maybe?). It's pretty good, but needs quite a bit of filler.

pyro,

I'll be using the Airfix kit. Not the best kit they have ever produced, but there are certainly worse (e.g. the 1/72 Airfix Blenheim). It's simple, seems to go together well enough (without too much filler) and looks like a Fw189.

Kewl - looking forward to seeing it!

MPM one, same difference I know  ;D I'm building the Airfix one myself at the moment as an Italian AF example in Southern Russia. As James says it goes together well and looks like a Fw 189.

Looking forward to seeing the schnellbomber
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

James, how about the Jumo 004s paired on either side of that pointy tailcone with the stabiliser moved up?

I do like the idea, but the thinking behind putting them on the wing was that it was that I was considering using Slovak Air Force markings, the idea being that they were a large user of the Fw189 and it was a fast way for the Slovak Republic to obtain high performance jet aircraft (based on an existing type - pilot familiarisation) for use against the Soviet invasion.

Underwing is fine, outboard of the booms, however, may not be the best way to go for structural and control reasons.
The center wing structure on the Fw 189 was much stronger and the would probably be a better place to  mount the
engines. It so also best to mount the engines fairly close together in case one ceases to function. A likely scenario with
a Jumo 004.  ;D

Messerschmitt schemed BMW 003 installations for the Me 410 that show a possible layout.

(note the drawing shows both single and twin engine installations)
