Got the itch to play with an F-5 and turn it into a swing wing.  Hardest thing is finding a pair of swing wings that "look right" on such a small airframe.

Try scaleorama. I want to do something similar to a Grumman Tiger and I found the best ones were 1/100th Tomcat wings.

Already looking at that :D

There's also those early Mig-23's with the red wings that might work, as well as Hasegawa's 1/72 Macross VF-1's that might work.

Consider using a 1/144 Su-17/20/22 wing set.  Given where the main gear is on the F-5, that'd be the most likely approach taken; though i'd argue that a vg wing would go better on a F-20 than a F-5.

Or an alternative would be to move the wing to the shoulder position as per the Northrop N-300 studies. It does mean you have to re-engineer the undercarriage though. Drawings in American Secret Projects - Fighters.

Actually, this was the direction I was heading, with gear installation similar to an F-8's (still need to jury-rig it up, though).

Consider "borrowing" the main gear from a X-29.

Remember this?

Obviously not the most sophisticated of gear conversions, but the point is that an F-5 kit will probably have a "tray" of some sort under the wing carry through, which you can re-scribe to show gear doors.

Oh, nice and with swing wings, about what I had in mind.

Split this topic from the original one.  Wanted to not over ride the previous topic's train of thought (which has a lot of potential).
