Assuming there's no objection from the rest of the moderating team, I'm hoping to get this one started in the next week.

I'm thinking of splitting this into two categories: dioramas and projects made from "found objects". What are your thoughts?

Since there may be cross-over between the two categories ("found" model in a nice diorama), why not have one GB but with two voting threads at the end of it, one for Best Use of Found Objects and one for Best Diorama?

I think thats a better idea.

Yup, Weaver's idea sounds pretty good!

Must, then, my projects bend to the iron yoke of a mechanical system? Is my soaring spirit to be chained down to the snail's pace of matter?

Modelling_Mushi

I agree with Weaver, Nev and ChernayaAkula, two categories would be great and, if someone really aces it, they could pick up both.

You read my mind and that's exactly what I envisioned.

I can moderate or co-moderate this GB, but if anyone else would like to volunteer, I'll  pass the baton.

Any word on if and when this might be starting? I'd love to join.

Finalised rules havn't been agreed yet.

In the Blue Peter GB which I proposed, and which fed into this as a starting point, I suggested quite strict rules to encourage innovation: no "major structural component" to be from a model kit or modelling "raw material" such as plastruct/evergreen etc... Minor detailing using kit parts was allowed, particularly where there's no reasonably alternative, such as canopies/propellors/undercarriage etc... What does or doesn't qualify as a "major structural component" would up to the mods.

I would suggest relaxing the rules to let more take part.  Gary did a lot of conversions & kitbashes too.
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

I'm with Simon.  If the rules are that strict, I'm out because what I want to do would be ineligable.

Lets not forget this is meant to comemorate a dead comrade, and a modelling free spirit.  Lets not bog it down with endless rules.  As long as the basis for your build is a "found item" I don't see the problem.

Fair comment, but then how do you differentiate a "found items" build from a "spares box" build? My feeling is that the point of the exercise is to capture the spirit of HOG's inhaler builds, rather than just be a re-run of the Styrene Junkyard GB.

I thought the point of the exercise was as a memorial to Gary?  I don't think he'd worry too much what we'd do.

My feeling would be for virtually no rules at all, just for everybody to tribute Gary in the way they thought best.  Just my feeling, I definately don't want to upset anyone about this.

Ditto: it's just a point for discussion, not something I'm banging the drum about. The Rules of a GB have to be set out, even if the The Rules are that there are No Rules.... ;D I'm more than happy to go with the consensus view. In any case, I can't imagine a set of rules that wouldn't allow what I have in mind.

I propose we get things going October 15th and have this run to December 15th, with the last two weeks of December reserved for an extension if necessary.

Beside having the "found objects" and diorama categories, I'd like to leave the rules fairly loose. I think entries in the "found objects" category should consist of a basis or majority of parts not from a model kit as a nod to the famous inhaler/headphone speaker projects HOG was so well known for. As always, I'm open to suggestions. Please feel free to add your thoughts.

Timeframe sounds good as they would then qualify for the Whiffies.
