Dan,

What's your definition of 'good'? :)

One thing about 1/144 scale ship models is they are BIG. You'll need a lot of room to build and display any for sure.
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

Hmmm, depending on which types of ships you want to build, things will get HUGE and expensive. Soar Art does some 1/144 battleships and even carriers. CLICKY! FWIW, their Tirpitz goes for around 1000$ here in Germany.
Cheers,

Must, then, my projects bend to the iron yoke of a mechanical system? Is my soaring spirit to be chained down to the snail's pace of matter?

That Z1 Class kit has been mentioned elsewhere on here recently. It's a re-release of Revel's USN Fletcher Class destroyer and from memory it's quite a good kit. For size reference, my 'Atlantic Conveyor' R/C model in 1/44 is 4.5 feet long, and substantially fills up my model room! :)

If you're building Nimitz class aircraft carriers and live in a one-room flat, then 1/144 is probably not your scale.  For smaller size subjects it can be a great scale.  The Revell Fletcher Class (also issued as the German Zerstorer you mentioned) is an outstanding kit of a very widely used class of ships.  There are a few 1/144 scale sub kits as well.  It's not a traditional ship scale however, so there's not a lot of choice.
