The Admirals Barge - Hawker Siddeley HS.625 Rainbow.

What do you get if you cross a Hawker Hunter FGA.9 with a Hawker Siddeley HS.125/600 ?  The HS.625 RAINBOW, a single Rolls-Royce Avon 207 turbojet engined military liaison aircraft.

Hawker Siddeley HS.625 Rainbow.

Commissioned on 16th October 1972 the HS.625 served as the only example of its type with the Royal Navy. Based at the Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton in Devon the Rainbow was the personal transport, the Admirals Barge as it was known, of Vice Admiral GEOFFREY GEORGE CBE. The Rainbow replaced the venerable de Havilland Heron which unlike the Rainbow was not available for Carrier landings.

Admiral George commented that he considered his new transport to be... "quite ZIPPY" and took pleasure in reviewing the Fleet along with his staff, Captains ROD, JANE and FREDDY.

The Rainbow was de-commissioned on the 6th March 1992 as part of the cost saving exercises by John Major's Government. Tetra Films bought the ageing airframe but despite three years of attempted revival, the Rainbow never reached it former glory. Admiral Geoffrey George was cashiered in 1997, a result of his part in the sordid scandal involving Rod, Jane and Freddy. The Admiral George claimed he was only a puppet in the affair but it was proved that he did, in fact, have a hand in practically everything. At his court marshall proceedings where interupted by a bright pink person of dubious sexuality exclaiming 'Oh Geoffrey' before covering their mouth with their only hand.

The Hawker Siddeley HS.625 Rainbow passed into the annals of history. If it had success then it was only in stopping the Royal Navy purchasing the American Lockheed Seasame ST which it out perfomed but failed to outlive. There was always an affection for the Rainbow. Often as it flew out of Yeovilton over the local Play School where the children would look to the sky and sing...

"Up above the streets and houses
Rainbow climbing high
Everyone can see it smiling over the sky
Paint the whole world with a rainbow"

Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)
