Weaver,
I am still a little confused over scales/size.

We have numerous builders here who normally build aircraft in 1/144th scale and armor in 1/72nd.  So I think that we need to go smaller in both these cases.

Also, in Sci Fi, the average Gundam is 1/144th scale.  Capital ships are very popular in 1/1000, 1/1400 and 1/2500 scales with most of these coming in below 10 inches in length.  Most sci-fi fighters are 72nd or larger.

And what about autos?  While 1/24-1/25th scales are the norm, there are plenty of kits in 32nd, 48th and 43rd scale that I would still classify as regular scales for autos.

I just don't have a good idea on where you draw the limit per type and what does that leave left to build?  For aircraft, I have seen great things done with 1/350th and 1/700rd scale and wouldn't mind attempting something in 350th.

I'm a bit confused as to why I never noticed that people had continued to post on this one - my apologies for not replying sooner....

I don't have all the answers myself, which is why I opened it up for debate.

Aircraft: the sticking point seems to be whether to include or exclude 1/144th. Excluding it feels "righter" to me, but then it also restricts the choice of kits much more, and as the Rat points out, kits in smaller scales are often of bigger aircraft, so they're not much smaller in practice.

Armour: I'm acutely aware that 1/72nd/76th is "small normal" rather than exceptionally small, but the problem is availability of kits, as opposed to ready-made models, in anything smaller. Does anyone do proper kits below 1/76th? Even Roco Minitanks (1/87th) are largely pre-assembled. Are those 1/285th ones kits or diecasts?

Sci-Fi's a minefield: maybe it needs different scale/size rules for different types, one for mechs (which I don't know much about), one for spaceships etc.. That's why I put the size rule in as well as the scale one. I do remeber having some mech kits as a kid that were much smaller than what seems to be normal: "Xabungle" rings a bell?

Autos: again, I don't know much about them. What do you rate as a "small" scale if 1/43rd is normal, and is there a decent selection of kits?

There's no reason why you shouldn't attempt something with a 1/350th aircraft if you want. There's no lower scale or size limit and I sincerely doubt that 1/350th will breach any upper limit...

How about a revised, simpler version of this idea, since it got bogged down in rules discussions:

It's a GB for small stuff, defined as:

Aircraft of 1/144th scale or smaller
Vehicles of 1/72nd scale or smaller
Ships of 1/700th scale or smaller
Sci-Fi models less than 8"/200mm long (because scale is such a minefield with spaceships)
