Honestly, the easiest, most-foolproof method I've ever used (without an airbrush) is described right here:

If you look under "ham-fisted modeler" in the dictionary, there is a picture of me.  So, if I can get decent BMF results with a technique, you KNOW it will work for anyone!

Gunze's Mr Metal Color. The paint may be pre-thinned for airbrushing straight out of the bottle, but it's also nothing short of magic when used with brush. Found this tip from a modelling club near my place: http://www.essmc.org.au/Natural_Metal_Finish.html

Tried and confirmed their method on several scrap parts (mostly spare "burner cans").

I have had fairly good luck with Rattle cans.  Been using the Aluminum from Walmart.  Place the can in some hot water for a couple minutes before spraying to help the flow.
