Día del puerto .......... A de Valencia de infamia

The world awoke on Sunday 7th dec 1941 to WAR......a dastardly surprise attack on a fleet in port, a fleet at peace and unprepared for this attack, or as Comrade Stalin would put it in his speach.

Comrades,

Yesterday, December 7th, 1941 -- a date which will live in infamy -- the Soviet Union and the Spanish Republic were suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Nationalist Spanish Rebels.

The Soviet Union was at peace with that nation and, at the solicitation of Nationalist Spain, was still in conversation with its government and its Dictator looking toward the maintenance of peace in the Mediterainian.

Indeed, one hour after Nationalist air squadrons had commenced bombing in the Spanish Port of Valencia, the Natinalist ambassador to the Soviet Union and his colleague delivered to our Commisar for foreign affars a formal reply to a recent Soviet message. And while this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or of armed attack.

It will be recorded that the distance of Valencia from Island bases of nationalist Spain makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time, the Nationalist government has deliberately sought to deceive the Soviet Union by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

The attack yesterday on the Port of Valencia has caused severe damage to Soviet naval and military forces. I regret to tell you that very many Soviet and Spanish lives have been lost.

Losses that day included the Spanish ships, Miguel de Cervantes, Mendez Nunez and the Battleship Espana with the soviets losing the battleship Parizhskaya Kommuna and the cruisers Krasny Kavkaz, Kirov and Maxim Gorky as well as destroyers and other fleet units with the facilities at Valencia being hard hit.

It appears that the raid was launched from Nationalist bases in Majorca in defiance of the 1939 cease fire agreement that had held until that day, over 200 aircraft are reported to have been involved in the mission by the jubilent Nationalists most of them copies of aircraft operated by Italy and Germany.

Losses to the aircraft of the Nationalists has been light with around 28 aircraft shot down but the Spanish republic is believed to have lost over 145 aircraft mainly on the ground, a severe blow to its strength with the civil war again starting, however imediate pledges of aid from the Soviet Union, Mexico and surprisingly Japan have heartened the stunned and shocked people.

Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.
