Erm, JMN mode on here......... 

That must be the world's weirdest #2 engine 'cos the fan and compressor stage seem to be at the top, as you can see the fan inside the intake, and the hot end is at the bottom.

Does that mean the engine's shaft has a chain drive to change levels or does it use the world's biggest flexi-drive?

its a fixed fan that is used to increase the preasure in the tunnel, due to the smaller frontal area, to provide the boost the normal trent fan makes, and thats my story and i am sticking to it lol

You should get on the phone to Nightingale Rd. and tell the blokes at R-R, they may not have cottoned onto that idea yet.....

after watching that fantastic program on bbc2 last night about those works i don't think they need any ideas from me the trent 1300 look like a monster wonder what Airbus are going to do with it all the TV said it was for a new " Airbus jumbo"

I always like telling nervous flyers that the turbine blades are running at 300 deg over the melting point of the metal they're made of while having 18 tons of force trying to pull them apart.....

I always like telling nervous flyers that the turbine blades are running at 300 deg over the melting point of the metal they're made of while having 18 tons of force trying to pull them apart.....

That bit made my brain boggle a bit I must admit  I had 30 odd years in the steel industry but even in the labs we wern't getting that adventurous

When I was working I installed two machines at Rolls-Royce that welded the blades onto the Typhoon engine compessors, and the fans of the JSF, by rubbing the pre-cast blades onto the hubs, called blisks. They rubbed them so hard they got hot and welded themselves in place..... all in a fraction of second! 

The Typhoon engine machine was about as big as an Escort van and the JSF fan machine was bigger than my HOUSE!
