Some real world proposals:

Mi-27 Airborne Command Post, two prototypes built:

Mi-26 Flying Crane, not proceded with:

Mi-26 NEF-M ASW variant.  Quite a beast for anti-submarine ops:

I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

That NEF-M variant has possibilities.  Fit it with some sort of surface-search radar, and it could tote anti-ship missiles like the Kh-31 or the ASM version of the P-270 (SS-N-22).  Alternately, it could be used as a Russian-style PAVE Low CSAR helo.

I've got the A Model 1/72 kit of it, it is --- HUGE ---

Here's a pic of it next to my EH-101 AWAC [which I've lengthened]

It's a crappy self-made pic of a Lockheed Unmanned Combat Armed Rotorcraft (UCAR), BTW

It started off as a 1/72 scale Cormorant, but after the fuselage stretch for and aft, it's as big as a CH-53 now.

Here's my build so far--
