Nichimio 30 cm scale

Does any of you know anything about these ship models? Are they so bad? Can they be usable for whiffery? Once finished, do they look like ships?

Well, not according to the grand ship list.

However, if you're going to cut it up or add/remove stuff anyway, they might be just fine.  I have some absolutely astoundingly bad pre-ww2 battleships from Lindbergh that are going to look awesome once they get wings and rockets.   

I recommend that list above strongly btw.  It might not review everything, but it does tend to let you in on who makes what and in what scale.

Don't expect to be able to make them look anything like their prototypes. But since you'll probably be whiffing them, they do look like ships, which is all one really needs in our odd yet inventive corner of the modeling universe.
