One ship class that made the transition in real life was/is the SL-7, which were commissioned by the SeaLand container shipping company. They had a top speed of 33 knots. After a few years of operation, they were bought by the US Navy and rebuilt to include ro-ro facilities and large cranes.

There were the "Fleet tenders " of WW1 which were merchant ships disguised as Battleships and the aircraft carrier Hermes.
