I always expected better of the French. At least the Lioré et Olivier LeO 45 and Amiot 354 were lookers.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the Dornier 228 in this discussion yet.

It IS a great plane.  I was torn between doing mine as a COD or E-2ish thing.  I went the AWACS route:

The only problem with the Do-228 is it's a leading contender in the World's Ugliest Aeroplane contest...........

As long as there's a Shorts Skyvan or BN Trilander still plying the skies, the 228 will NEVER be ugly.

There's a right and a wrong way to design a box with wings. The 228 is the right way.

Can't argue with that. I like it, although I still prefer the Do28 due to its engine arrangement/location.
