British v. U.S. Aircraft Design

I'm wondering two basic things about the differences between USAAF and RAF fighter design. 

1: While I understand why many of the RAF's fighters weighed less than ours, how come some of the larger designs ended up weighing more than ours?

2: Why did the RAF's designs generally have their wings so much further forward compared to our designs?
