The Type 82 destroyer was a general purpose destroyers designed to escort the CVA-01 class carriers, and carrying the next generation of weapons & systems.
These escorts had a good ASW performance with Variable Depth Sonar, Limbo Depth Charge Mortar and the new Australian Ikara system to fly a drone carrying an ASW torpedo or depth charge to hit submerged contacts outside the range of normal ship based ASW weapons. The Type 82 also had the Anglo-Dutch type 988 broomstick 3D radar as carried by CVA-01 along with the new Sea Dart SAM system. The new vickers Mk8 4.5" automated gun was also to be carried.

There were expected to be up to 8 ships of the class to act as escorts to the carriers, although only 1 had been ordered when the carrier program was cancelled, however one ship HMS Bristol was to be retained and act as a trails ship for the new technology to be used in the next generation of destroyers. The type 988 was replaced by the standard conventional radar and the VDS system was cancelled, the design of the aft funnel was also revised.

I actually built the hull for this when is did my CVA-01 back in 2009, however it didnt have the right feel to it and languised in the to do pile since then. The recent work on the Terra Nova and SCS did prompt me to look again at the Type 82 hull, so i had another carving and shaping session which rsulted in a finer and more accurate hull form and last week i created the superstructure for it. Still some bits to do before i can fix the superstructure in place, but i'm alot happier with the look and feel of the ship now

ooh, nice!

Wasn't the 988 radome supposed to be a cylinder with a half-sphere on top? Yours looks a bit conical.

Nice one!  As you know, I'm a bit interested in the Type 82 design.

Ye it is a bit but no suitable diameter tube of rod to use as a basis as yet  :-\

Thought you would have liked to see the progress on it  ;)

I always liked the comment that the Broomstick dome, with the air gap between it's supports, looked like a Guardsman: busby up top, but nothing between the ears....

I once dreamt up an alt-Type 82 where the forward ASROC-type launcher is deleted, the Sea Dart moved into it's place and the freed up space at the rear instead contains a Helicopter hangar in the alt-superstructure.

CVA-01 still got cancelled, but my massively rich alt-brits built ten Type 82 as Destroyer Leaders. Their jobs were Escort group flagships, Station ships in far off places and generally showing the flag.

Not a good photo but a quick update to show where things are upto.

I everntually managed to find something more suitable for the 988 radome and once that was sorted out i could continue assembly and fit the ship out. Some of the weapons and details will be added after painting as it will easy to paint without having to paint around them.

Should be primmed tommorrow and ready for painting during the week as 10 days to finish it !!!!!!! :banghead:
