You ever have those times where no matter how much you think a model may be 100% finished, It never truly is and you sometimes go: "I wished I had thought of doing that sooner." or "I can't believe I forgot about that!"
No matter how hard we try, there's always something we'll forget or something we think could've been done better, etc., but we can't go back to the model and add it cause the model is already completely finished.

I'm feeling just such a case right now and I could rip my hair out for not thinking of it sooner. Let me give an example:
My Project Habakkuk model is coming along nicely and should be finished this Spring. But the ship is not what concerns me. It's the display base instead. I just had the crazy idea tonight that instead of the base being wood, It shoulda been made from clear thick Lexan acrylic sheet instead, and then somehow add small strips and panels of "cracked ice" ceiling lighting panel pieces to the clear Lexan base to give the impression that the Habakkuk was sitting on a block of ice. Though I'd probably still add thin clear square rods under the ship spaced evenly like the way you see other modelers add those wood pieces under their boats. I'm not sure how else to explain my idea. If you don't understand, then you'll just have to use your imagination. Anyway, I wished I had thought of this sooner, but it's too late now as the Habakkuk model is glued directly to the base and I dare not risk damaging anything to the ship if I tried to forcefully remove it from the base.

Anyway, What's everyone else's story?
Modeling isn't just about how good the gluing or painting, etc. looks. It's also about how creative and imaginative you can be with a subject.
My modeling philosophy is: Don't build what everyone else has done. Build instead what nobody has seen or done before.

I think similar things with pretty much every kit i do..

Pretty much eveything I've ever done I wish I'd done it differently. Modelling too.

Plenty of builds like that!! I know exactly how you feel. I think its just a matter of there always being so much detail to add that a model can look for all intents and purposes "done" when there is in fact always a few more tiny details to add.

Maybe you get really bold and eventually separate your ship from its base... It a neat idea. I don't think a wood base takes away from it though, not by any stretch.

What he said. The model is the primary subject, a "cool' base might draw attention away from what is a stunningly amazing build. IMHO, of course.
