In the late 1920's the main suppliers of fighter aircraft for the RAF were Gloster and Hawker, however ,the management at Supermarine were keen to enter the field and set their designer R J Mitchell the task of building a high performance fighter. Mitchell had seen the Hawker Hornet and decided he could do better, so using the Rolls Royce Kestrel IIS engine of 525hp, he set about designing his new fighter. He chose the smallest possible airframe and married it to an eliptical wing form , which he considered would give less drag. The resulting aircraft gave a stunning performance, being capable of 240mph, which was 30 mph faster than its Hawker rival. The Air Ministry was so impressed that they wrote specification F13/30 to cover both the Supermarine and Hawker aircraft , the Spitfire immediately entered production and the first aircraft were in service with 19 squadron at Duxford in September 1930. the Spitfire remained the RAF's fastest fighter until replaced by the Gloster Gladiator.

I like it!

You may know of "the other Spitfire", the Supermarine 224, an inverted-gull wing monoplane fighter predecessor to the Spitfire we know and love.

Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.
