I have the book on the making of this film. The colour scheme was chosen because of the language barriers between the crew & many of the Spanish Air Force pilots, who could not speak English, plus the need to have the aircraft form up on & approach the camera-plane from various angles; the colours made it easier for the director of photography (flight scenes) to give his directions to his pilots.
