Group Builds - Change in Direction - Discussion Thread

Personally, I think that one "theme" build a year is not enough to keep up my interest. Unless I'm building a major diorama, I seldom take more than a couple months for a model. The GB's do add some urgency to not let a model sit around partially finished for very long.  I can see some of the admin's points about recent GB's that have had few finished models and the constant requests for extensions, but I'm afraid this new idea is too far the other directions. My opinion is that fewer GB's a year is OK and give them about 4 months running time and don't have them with the same start and stop dates, may be a better option.

Right now, I've got half a dozen models with WHIFF ideas ready for the list of GB's we had coming up (Space, Never Retired, Captured,...). I guess, I'll just work on them anyway. I'll think about a "Ausie-rama" theme, but don't have anything appropriate at this time.

I'm willing to see how this new idea pans out, but I have some reservations.

We don't just embrace insanity here.  We feel it up, french kiss it and then buy it a drink.

What Tom and Geoff have said mirror my thoughts exactly.  We had in-depth discussions prior to announcing this, with us arguing the various points brought up here, but, like Tom said, we saw the wisdom in doing it this way.  The one sentiment he put out there was the old system worked well when we kept it small, but it just got too big (waaaaaay too big).

In addition to the "Sanctioned" GB, various themed member group builds can go whole hog without waiting for a slot in the old GB calendar.  Currently, I'm aware of at least two member builds starting up, and I wholly encourage that.

As for Aussie-rama, more details on it will be coming soon.

See how it goes, we can always change it if we don't like it.

What the admin have proposed would work much better into my necessary professional and personal responsibilities thus giving me time to enter, enthuse, and accomplish.    So far I'm batting 100% non-compliance by getting a large time interruption in everything I've started for this group save for the little fishing bobber turned into a Steampunk Bouy.    Recovering from this economic smash takes priority over model building.   But, with the grace of a little more time, there ought to be a bit more finished work from this Doc.

And if you're lacking for ideas OZ-related, I wish I had photos of the Defense of the Fjords Tamiya F4U-1D on floats and in full New Zealand markings that was on display Sept 17th literally under the tail of the Spruce Goose.   What a blast!      I suppose those living in the outback could put those Russian Aerosans on offroad wheels and tear around the countryside making more noise than the Qantas Concordes, but I digress.......
