What to do with old destroyers & frigates that are past their prime?

Simple, convert them into commando-carrying High Speed Transports(APD).

They are very useful for small-scale operations in remote places.

One of the Argentine navy's Type 42 destroyers, the ARA Hercules apparently has just such a mission. Her Sea Dart system is unserviceable (launcher still fitted) due to a UK embargo on missiles and parts, so they've taken the rear 909 tracker off and fitted a double Sea King hangar. Allegedly, she's had internal re-fitting to carry a much larger marine detachment too.
