FWIW, I've been studying the Century fighters as well as the renumbered designs in the aftermath of TFX on wikipedia. Because there's precious little documentation of the non-winning bids for VFX, my read between the lines is that the submissions consisted of a series of tables of proposed performance numbers, the intended source of critical "parts" (e.g. engines), and projected overall project cost. So for a wiff Republic VFX, you can pretty much do whatever you want. And yes, it could have been rejected because it wasn't going to built in the 'correct' congressional district.

This actually plays into some of my ideas. I've been thinking of building "something" with two F100's and two Thunderchief tails. Just didn't want to have to scratchbuild everything between the nose/cockpit and the leading edges of the main wing.

Well, the answer obviously to the second one is where the F-111 was made.  Texas wasn't it?
