The Mexican Air Force's major contribution to the UN effort in the Gulf was regular deployments of F-16C and D fighters. These planes assisted both in the enforcement of the Gulf Demilitarised Zone (GDZ) against Iran and the counter insurgency campaign in Iraq. During combat patrols, sorties were often been switched from one UN Operation to the other as part of Central Command's WIde Area Tactical Immediate Response Package management program (WIATIRP, pronounced the same as the American Wild West figure, Wyatt Erp).



This aircraft carries a typical Mexican F-16C WIATIRP load. For air-to-air work, a combination of AIM-120 and AIM-9X was used. For surface attack, a Litening II imaging and targeting pod helped with the delivery of a pair of GBU.12s and a single GBU.38. For electronic warfare a ASQ-213 HARM targeting pod was used as was an ALQ-184 on the centreline. Two AN/ALE-50 Towed Decoy Systems were also carried.




If you look closely at some of these photos, you can just make out the white WIATIRP logo just behind the canopy, featuring a pair of six-shooters either side a white star and topped with the word Sheriff.
