Captain Canada

hey !

After a month ( yikes ! ) of no building, I'm back at it ! After consuming a few ( rather tasty ) pints of Guiness, I sat down and got cracking on some wee ships.

This is the Mirage Hobby 400 scale Tarantul Class Russian Korvette, modeled as a 350 scale ship. This will from part of the Squadron for my Patrol Class carrier. This one is the Emergency landing Ship, and is devoid of most electronic gear, with the bulk of her load being avgas for wayward SHARs and Sea Kings.

I like the look of the CIWS up front, kinda gives it a wee destroyer look, eh ?

The other two Corvettes in the escort will be an Air Defence ship, and the third is an anti-sub type.

Hope to do the diorama base tomorrow, and then bash the last Corvette tomorrow nite, and finish the details on all three by weekend.

Cheers !

Love those ships, they look great !!!
By the way, that glass looks sad...needs a refill !

Thanks Greg !

They are sweet little kits, with lots of spare bits n' bobs to add details to other ship kits......I still need to do all the detail painting, plus add a few rails and ladders etc.

That beer may look a wee bit sad, but you shoulda seen her a few minutes before that, with that glorious chocolate-brown and tan cascade that a good old guiness will provide....mmmm....got my mouth watering already, and it's only 9am !

Sweet little ship, Cap'n!  I've got a German carrier that needs to be finished up, but can't quite kick my butt into gear with the beautiful weather we've been having lately.  Totally off the subject, how did you fair in the storms on Sunday?

Back to the ship.

I like the CIWS up front.  I was going to suggest maybe putting a RAM launcher on it, but then I re-read your post and noticed it's really just an armed floating landing platform.

Cap'n, another question for you.  Are you working on or have worked on an Arleigh Burke class ship, modified for use as a DDH?  I've got a pic of one on my hard drive with a heavily modified aft section with a Cormorant and what looks like one of your SlingSHARs (like the one in the background of the above pic) on the landing pad.  The model in the pic isn't finished, and I was just curious if it was completed.

Hey Anthony !

I just managed to get all the lawn furniture and umbrella put away before that big storm hit.....was over in minutes, tho ! Pretty cool, the sky went orange, and there were these three layers of cloud....pretty funky !

How's you guys fare ? I didn't here much news of damge, I guess we were pretty lucky, as we're wy overdue for a Tornado !

Not much progress on the Archie Burke, I've done a bit of work on the hangar interior, but that's about it.

Cheers !

The shield around Sterling Heights held.  No joke, whenever a storm is headed towards my city, as you watch the radar, it wusses out as soon as it hits the Macomb County line, rains a little on us, then reforms to the East of us.  Sunday's storm was no different.  We had some deep red headed towards us, then it hit the county line, turned instant green, and then reformed to the northeast of us and proceeded on to you.  We had some rain, a little lightning, a little wind, and that was it.  It was cool to watch head toward us, though.  I'm curious to see how the Thumb faired as it got hit repeatedly.

Back to the model.  Can't wait to see the Archie Burke completed.

What a cool idea. You almost want a vertical launch system, you know, the boat comes ripping in, pilot in the pit, as you race to shore at 50 kts the boat crests a large swell and pow, the Harrier is thrust upwards into the slip stream already pulling the wings skyward. The boat continues on inward and rips a few of those lovely radar tracking missles in to ward off the bad guys who have just realized an airplane has appeared on their scopes and kablewie, rasberry jam all over the radar shack. Meanwhile the Harrier coninues to scream inland and rips the poo out of that costal missle site that was threatening the main task force. Now the real invasion can begin.
Later at the correct coordinates off the beach, the Chignecto waits for her bird to come back to nest. Tomorrow, it's up the river to the main city.

Nice project you have going there, just hope the weight of your Harrier doesn't sink your little vessel.

On another note, has anyone every attempted to build a modern APD?  This was a WWII era conversion of some of the early four stack destroyers to carry a couple of LCVP landing craft and a contingent of Navy Underwater Demolition Teams.  I have had some ideas floating around for a conversion of the Spruance or Kidd class destroyers to something along those lines with Marine RECON and Navy SEAL teams as well as Ranger and other Special Forces troops.  The conversion would retain the main gun forward and replacing the ASROC launcher with the VLS as was done on several of the class and modify the amidships section to accomodate a pair of landing craft or rigid hull inflatable raiding craft to support littoral combat operations and still retain the helicopter hangar and landing pad to support the MH-60 series helicopter for aerial insertion or helo-casting operations.

Any feedback or suggestions?

Keep up the work in the shipyards Cap'n, BUT...

You're slipping a bit aren't you? I mean, that glass doesn't exactly dwarf that Testors bottle!  :P

Ohhhh, cr*p, you just shunted one of my old ideas to the round file in favor of this one.  :D So long Peruvian DDH...

The last Spruance was supposed to be built with an extra-large hangar, enough for 4 helos, or even 2 V-22s. I've already started such a conversion, now I have to find a bunch of RHIBs and the right helo - a SpecOps PaveHawk most likely. In black or grey? The after gun goes in favor of a boat ramp and the RHIBs. A special camo job will definitely be necessary, and I have just the one.

In want of hobby space!  The kitchen table is never stable.  Still managing to get some building done.

By the weekend ? lol ! Within the decade more like ! Wow time flies. I am actually doing a real concerted effort to finish half-builts. Read my lips....no new starts ! So these boats will be on the list of to-dos.

On a serious note, kinda sad to read this thread though. With time passed since I started the build, and there are three fallen comrades in the list of replies.
