Presumably there's some alphabetical logic in the Chinese designations, as bombers all seem to be 'H's and fighters all seem to be 'J's.

Could someone a) confirm this and b) explain what the letters mean please?

Copied from the linked designations page:

In western transcription, the following type letters exist:

BA - ? ? ? (Drone)
CJ - Chuji Jiaolianji (Primary Trainer)
H - Hongzhaji (Bomber)
J - Jianjiji (Fighter)
JL - Jiaolianji (Trainer)
Q - Qiangjiji (Attack)
SH - Shuishang Hongzhaji (Maritime Bomber)
WZ - Wuren Zhencha (UAV)
X - Xiangji (Glider)
Y - Yunshuji (Transport)
Z - Zhishengji (VTOL/Helicopter)
The CJ- and JL-designated trainers apparently share the same numerical series.

Export versions of aircraft are often marketed with "westernized" prefixes, e.g. "F", "A" and "B" instead of "J", "Q" and "H", respectively.

Training, reconnaissance and other modifications of fighters and bombers a second prefix letter:

D - Dian (Electronic Warfare)
J - Jiaolianji (Trainer)
U - You (Tanker)
Z - Zhenchaji (Reconnaissance)

This results in the designation prefixes:

HD - Hongzhaji Dian (Bomber, modified for EW)
HJ - Hongzhaji Jiaolianji (Bomber Trainer)
HU - Hongzhaji You (Bomber, modified as tanker)
HZ - Hongzhaji Zhenchaji (Reconnaissance Bomber)
JJ - Jianjiji Jiaolianji (Fighter Trainer)
JZ - Jianjiji Zhenchaji (Reconnaissance Fighter)
QD - Qiangjiji Dian (Attack, modified for EW)

I wonder why they use "Western" characters for their designations. Better for exports?

Either that (English being a sort of de-facto international language, and all that) or to prevent foreigners getting tongue-tied/ mangling the language while trying to pronounce the Chinese!

If you look very carefully at a good number of them (whif's) the artist has a deviantArt ID, but I can't get one screen where the whole thing is legible. He may have even more in a gallery there.

Where on earth can you see a deviantART ID on any of these pics???

At the bottom - and while grabbing the image location, I get to see a legible version of the deviant ID -----------derp! I'm especially thick today I guess

He's got a average size gallery and has some of the mil artwork, including H-10, ships, and some traditional art and a few web comics.

Some fantastic stuff there, thanks for posting
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

Not many pictures here, the blog is unaccesible from Turkey as well. Any chance of uploading them again?

It doesn't work with the proxies as well, never minding the suggestion is also banned in Turkey for being a proxy. Thanks anyhow.
