Here is a Spitfire that I have been trying to build for about 10 yrs. I couldn't get the RAF camo right on it. After about 5 tries I gave up on it and it sat on the "Shelf of Doom".
Then I thought What if... it was used in the USAF along side F-51-D Mustangs, in a reverse lend lease program.

It's a Hobby Craft Mk XIV Spitfire in 1/48th scale. Nothing fancy about this one. I just couldn't toss it out, I love the MkXIV's but could never get a happy RAF finish on her. So I painted the bottom white and the top with automotive gray primer. Color sanded both sides and used Tamiya decals leftover from a Korean F-51-D Mustang. Exhaust was from a Monogram P-39 Airacobra. The stand is a big block Chevy Exhaust valve.

Before I could get a clear coat on it the "Red Eraser" was lost on a late night build marathon.

The front looked to dark with the black spinner so I decided to add the blue.

I still need to add a few little things to her. But at least she is not waiting on the "shelf of doom".

Thans for looking... John

Me as well. That might be the first Spitfire I've seen in post war US markings, but then I am getting on so memories fade
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.

That is one of my favorite Spitfire marks, although I like the bubble canopy ones even better

This got me wondering about one thing: most Spitfire XIV pictures with that weapon mix seem to have the 20 mm guns in the outer positions and the .50 machine guns on the inside. I wonder why...

Different wing , this kit depicts the C wing , which had provision for one or two 20mm cannon and two .303 machine guns in each wing. The wing you mentioned was the E wing which had one 20mm and one .50 in each wing. The E wing replaced the C wing during Spitfire production.

The wing in this thread also has one 20mm and one .50 in each wing (right?), but they are placed differently. Are you saying that the  C wing had only one possible place for the 20 mm and the .50 could be installed on the outside of it? The .303 machine guns always seem to be even further on the outside.

No , the wing in the pic is a "C wing" , One 20mm and a blanking plug in the outer cannon bay, only the "E wing" carried .50's and always in the inner cannon bay with the 20mm's in the outer bay.

In want of hobby space!  The kitchen table is never stable.  Still managing to get some building done.
