Upengined Lysander as a carrier aircraft.Possibly with an engine from a Buffalo.

Could it carry a torpedo with suffucent extra horsepower or depth charges or even RP projectiles

How did a Lysanders takeoff run compare with a Swordfish

with a navalised Lysander could you  build shorter escort carriers?

Mossie

The P.12 version of the Lizzie with the tandem wing and tail turret was designed for anti shipping and strafing attacks.  I'm not sure if it could have carried a torpedo, although there was space enough.

I can't find a figure for the Swordfish, but Wiki lists the Lizzie's run as being 305 yards from standstill to 50ft high.  I'd guess the P.12's performance would have been improved due to the extra lift given by the wing, although the turrets weight could be a penalty?
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Not to Hijack this discussion but I completed my FAA Mk. IV(N) just yesterday:

The Allied forces needed an aircraft to drop and pick up long range recon team members who worked with the coast watchers. Amphibians were used but a wheeled version was also required.

The Mk. III was selected as a base. An upgraded Mercury XXV engine with 1,200 HP, a 4 bladed propeller was installed. The center glazing was replaced with sheet metal for added strength to handle the violent Pacific Storms.  Hurricane 250 Gal drops added to provide the safety margin for the long over water flights.

The kit is a "rescue" of a partially built Airfix version which I got as part of a stash buy from a local modeller. It had surface damage hence my selection of a dark colour. The center section metal work (.010 sheet) was added so I did not have to paint all the glazing, The soft edges on the canopy made it almost impossible to get a nice straight line.

Build Notes:
What a PITA build.
Drops tanks from an Academy Hurricane
Propeller from an Academy P-47D
The decals are from a Techmod F4F FAA sheet.
Brush painted with Hannants Xtra-colour acrylic GSB.
Propeller mount: a tooth pick.  ;D

Martin has built a naval Lysander, one old guy got it completely confused with the Swordfish. At least I hope he was just a little confused with age as he was telling us how he used to fly them.  I'm not saying anything about age and confusion because it can happen to the sharpest of minds. Just shows that we need to get the history down while people are young enough to remember.

As for carrying a torpedo ? Well the Mk IIIA (SD) had an unloaded weight of 4,365lbs and a loaded one of 10,000lb, so there's room there for a torpedo I would have thought ? Weights from the Putnams Westlands book

Nice model Mr Gimper. I remember the old Airfix kit but I was a small child then so wasn't bothered with quality. The Matchbox kit is quite simple but very nice to build. Built a Romanian one

That works!

I do think a Lizzie would look very fetching in the RN/Coastal scheme of white with camo top surfaces.
Some of my models can be found on my Flickr album >>>HERE<<<

Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Cheers. Yours is a damn fine example as well.

Mine is at least 10 years old, and still gets the occasional outing at the shows. along side my single seater Firefly.
