Vought P-52 Corsair (1:72 Academy)

The second of our trifecta of October whifs is the Vought P-52 Corsair. This is the reverse of the earlier Sea Mustang: a major USN asset that was converted to become a long-range fighter in the ETO. The likelihood is that, by this time in the war, it would probably be wearing a NMF, but I wanted to see the F4U1 in Olive Drab and Gray. Perhaps this squadron never got that memo.

This is an Academy kit. Not much in the interior, but the overall fit was fine for what I was looking for. The markings, serendipitously, came from the P-51 kit that I used for the Sea Mustang. "Blondie" was flown by Marvin Arthur of the 334th Fighter Squadron, 4th Fighter Group, based in Essex. He might be surprised to discover he made those kills in a Corsair rather than a Mustang.

The P-52 designation was actually used (by a Bell project IIRC) but I stole it anyway.

Nice idea! BTW, camouflaged Corsairs are nice beasts, but rare. I could not resists not long ago to build a 1969 "Soccer War" F4U-1D:

Dizzy: I was aware of the Soccer War Corsair, but for some reason small air forces have never really done much for me, so even though I believe I have some decals for it, it has never come to the top of the queue. Yours looks nice, however, and could cause me to reconsider.

There IS actually a decal set available for Soccer War Corsairs (they flew on both sides!), but mine was completely improvised from scrap - just based on pics of real aircraft and of 1:48 models (Hobby Craft did a FAS Corsair in 1:48).
