Removing the food source is always the first step. Is there a way to use a better feeder that doesn't spill so much? I know birds are messy eaters, that's why we no longer have one in the house. Some of the commercial rat baits should help, just make sure other animals or pets can't get to it. And traps will snag some too. Its really a multi step approach to the problem. As long as there is a food source, wether its a bird feeder or the neighbor that won't close the lid on the trash can, these devils will show up. Or borrow a small terrier and keep it in the garden area.

On the farm the dogs keep the rats down although my youngest nephew helps out with his air rifle. Some of the things are huge  Problem with poison is that it can effect everything even kids and as the farm is a commercial stable with lots of small kids poison is avoided
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.
