From the ship modelling sites there are news of some interesting kits due out:-

Gallery Models are doing the USS Intrepid in 1/350th scale in her current build aka Angled Deck and Enclosed bows so finally a handy Vietnam War era carrier. Gallery did the Wasp and New York  and have been reboxed by MRC, Revell and Trumpeter, so going off those examples we may see the airgroup available as additional kit sets.
Hopefully HobbyBoss will scale it down to 1/700 and a more acceptable price bracket.

BlueRidge Models are doing resin battleships of the Montana class  in both 1/350 and 1/700  including 18 and 20 inch armed versions to set off against the Fujimi Super Yamato, they are also doing a post war version with Regulus and a later Cold War version in both 1/350 and 1/700. Also due out is a late coldwar 1/700 Arsenal Ship under the guise of a new USS Arizona.

Those announcements look very interesting.  Forgive my ignorance, but are the BlueRidge Models resin or styrene?

Good update, I second your hopes of a cheaper alternative in 1/700.  I would realy like an affordable 1/700 Essex class, with the "27 Charlie" updates in plastic, and with a hearty air wing, I hate how most kits only give you 4-6 aircraft of each type.  We need a squadron each of A-1, S-2, A-3, A-4, F-8, helo's etc.  This could make for a good Vietnam era Essex.

I'm just too cheap to justify a $100+ kit of an aircraft carrier, but would pay ~$40 for a good kit with a good sized airwing.  I don't need photetching if it keeps prices down- leave that for the aftermarket.

A post war Montana sounds great.
