I was about to buy a pair of aftermarket WWI German machine guns (Spandaus or Parabellums: the sort of thing you'd see on the cowling of a fighter) for a wacky project, but it then struck me that a serious WWI modeller might have already done this and have the "inferior" kit parts spare.

So, do you have a pair of MGs going spare? If so, what do you want for them? I'll pay or swap - up to you. Bear in mind that the aftermarket ones are £6 + postage, so postage charges will probably make doing a deal outside the UK non-viable, unfortunately.

There is a slim possibility I may have two resin ones in 1/48 from a detail set for a FW190.....the 7.92mm air cooled cowling guns...would they be any good, before I look for them...away for the week from Monday so limited time to look this weekend.....H

No, thanks for the offer Hank, but they're not what I want. I want the World War One style guns that look like Maxim or Vickers guns but with the fat water-cooling jacket replaced by a fat perforated jacket.

Harold.....this is what was in the goody bag.....the coin is a 5p and I think they are vickers machine guns but I suspect they are 1/35.....you are welcome to them if you can use them...

Yes I think they're around 1/32nd to 1/35th, which would make them too big. Pity...

Thanks for trying anyway - much appreciated.

Rats.

Cheers for looking Hank!

Looks like its the aftermarket ones for you then Harold

Yep - reckon. They're not desperately dear and they are very pretty.... I'll wait and see if I can get the rest of the bits in place first though.

Solved it! Picked up a 1/48th Revell Albatross D.V for a tenner in Hobbycraft. It's got two tolerably nice Spandaus in it and I realised that the fuselage will cut up into shapes that help with other projects. Since the resin guns I was looking at were £6.50, I'm happy with that.

Thanks everyone who tried to help!

I was just about to suggest making some of your own.  A piece of tube with a smaller one inserted and glued to the bottom wall, plus some putting to fill the rest of the larger tube and it would look a lot like a watercooled MG.  Add a block to the rear of the larger tube and scratch some spade grips and it would look fine IMHO.

Cheers, but the point is, they're NOT watercooled MGs: they have a perforated barrel jacket the same size as the water-cooled jacket, and it has oval slots in it, which would be damned-near impossible to make yourself. See the museum pic I posted earlier.
