Really?  I saw a cut-away of it and I couldn't see the turbo at all.  Admittedly it could have been a shitty drawing...
That being said, I'd like to remind everybody in a manner reminiscent of the SNL bit on Julian Assange, that no matter how I die: It was murder (even if there was a suicide note or a video of me peacefully dying in my sleep); should I be framed for a criminal offense or disappear, you know to blame.

You probably couldn't see a turbocharger because it didn't have one  -- ever!

Look at this photo, six exhaust stubs sticking out the sides, each one serving two cylinders, one above and one below.

Two-stage supercharger -- well yes it did, mounted at the rear of the engine

Kitnut617,

Okay... no wonder I couldn't see it!

How was the F7F, and Tempest arranged?

Dare I hazard a guess, Kendra/Robynn, the same?  Most engines seem to have adopted an inline arrangement of engine and supercharger at the rear.  I'd also suggest that is the only way to do it with a radial?  That way you get easy access to the camshaft from the rear of the engine block for PTO and minimise the frontage for drag.

Tempest was almost exactly like the Typhoon, Tigercat also had only a supercharger.  Look at photos of it, all the exhaust stubs are sticking out the cowling.

Two speed single stage supercharger.

The earlie Sabres had double sided impellers, but they were still single stage.
