Glatton Airbase, USAAF

If you ever drive down the A1 in Cambridgeshire, look to the east for a water tower. Come off the motorway and double back down the ex-A1, now the B1043, to see the memorial to the 457th Bombardment Group of the Eighth Air Force.

You might pass this 250 year old mile marker along the way, just 64 miles from London and 21 from Cambridge.

The water tower behind is huge, the airfield is actually 1 mile down the hill from here.





Now drive a little further off the main road to Conington and see the church. It's now closed and only open by request but there's a wellkept memorial in the overgrown churchyard.

As an American I never know just what to say when I see one of these memorials in Britain dedicated to our Airmen other than thank you so much.

Nice to see these. 

There's a lot of banter between Yanks and Brits about our respective countries, customs and habits, but never get the idea that we don't remember or appreciate the sacrifices that have been made. We do, and we're grateful.

There is a portion of a cemetery outside Cambridge where many American servicemen are buried. An impressive memorial is there.

My aunt and uncle took me by this last October during my visit.  Was very interesting and I am looking forward to more sites if I can make the trip again next year.

That is either one heck of a tree house or the trees are eating the old tower.

It's the emergency water tank, almost standard fit on USAAC bases of the period. The older RAF bases had ENORMOUS brick built EWS towers, some were so substantial that they still stand to this day.
