Hey all,

I've been getting notices from our hosting provider that we have a higher than normal server load. I've been trying to figure out what the deal is. Eventually we'll need to tear the site down and rebuild it with better code, etc, but is anyone hotlinking from this site? (eg you've posted something on another site, but linking the image from here) - if so, please stop doing so, and remove your link. Our annual operating budget is $100 a year, and the next step up is a managed/dedicated server, which is a whopping $1800 a year.

I wouldn't even know HOW to 'hotlink' from here to anywhere else.....  ;D

Could it be just a very heavy volume of posts Tom? I'm on here 4-6 times a day and there's always LOADS of stuff to read and respond to, more than there was this time last year I reckon.

Agreed. We just do more these days and look at more I would say.

SMF has released versions 1.1.20 and 2.0.9 which address some discovered security issues,
I just installed the 2.0.9 patch on BTS.

I note that What If is currently on the 1.1.17 version from January 2013, perhaps update to the latest
version may help?

The release notification states that 1.1.20 is the final patch/update for the 1.1.X version of the software:
"If you are still using 1.1.x branch, please be aware this will be the last patch released for this version, so you are strongly urged to upgrade to 2.0.9, in order to be able to continue to receive security upgrades to your forum. Note that we will continue to provide support for 1.1 until 2.1 final is released."

Erm, is it even possible to hotlink pics from this site?  AFAIK, anyone not logged in won't see pics uploaded to this site. And anything stored with a hosting service such as Photobucket shouldn't add to whatifmodelers' server load.

Definitely needs patching. I plan on doing that on the weekend. The search spiders aren't helping either, I'm working on a way of blocking those.

If you need to do another fund raising, I'm in with a donation  ---

I don't think I am doing any of that. I like to keep 'life' on FB and my favourite hobby here.

As for donations, I'm in. I finally figured out PayPal, and the new chip debit/ credit card finally brings us into the US 90s.

Being a total computer dweeb, I wouldn't know what the heck hot-linking is. Which begs the question: is it possible that people like me are doing it without realising it? Let us know and I'll stop.

Turn off the email for this site.  You probably have someone sending spam with your site email.

I've totally forgotten about that! I'll look into that, thanks!
