A little more done.  Last of the decals on. Serials taken straight from a Phantom.....Satin varnish on.  Yes, that is apparently satin!



Undercarriage is on.  Working on the cockpit/canopy and armament.

The windscreen in this kit is wrong...just wrong.  The framing is wrong, so I've sanded it off as best I can and will redo it.

Vought F-8K Crusader F.1

With the impending retirement of the big carriers already looming at the end of the 1960's, the Admiralty was keen not to lose it's control of the air at sea.  Despite claims by the RAF that it could cover anywhere in the world from it's land bases, eventually the treasury gave in and allowed the purchase of 2 ex-USN Forrestal class carriers, that were being decommissioned and replaced by nuclear Nimitz class ones.
Part of the deal included buying aircraft to fill the two behemoths.  Alongside the F-4's already ordered, many types were bought to fill the decks, including the F-8.
Modified with British equipment, including RWR and Red Top missiles, the Crusader proved popular with it's pilots, as a true dogfighter.

That looks so right ! What a lovely aeroplane. Great job. Love the shots from the underside...I can just imagine seeing them at an airshow...wow

Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)
