In this month's 'Flypast' magazine, (the MARCH issue for goodness sake!  :banghead:) the one with a Lightning F6 on the cover, there's a brill feature about full size time-expired spoof F-84Fs that the Belgian Air Force converted to look like their then new Mirage 5s! This was to fool any Soviet satellite or overflights, and they went to great lengths, adding side intakes, pointed noses, removing the tailplanes, adding dorsal fins and filling in the gap astern of the wing trailing edges to make them into deltas!

If it won't contravene the Forum copywrite rules I'll post a couple of pics later.

It occurs to me that one of these would be not only be easy to model by cross kitting a Thunderstreak and a Mirage kit (and I've got more than one of both.....  ;)) but you could REALLY wind up some JMNs by showing one on the SIG stand at a show with sign saying it WASN'T a Whiff.  ;D  ;)
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

THAT sounds odd... but the fun of creating a true thing should be worth it!

I'd love to see a few, or more than a few pics.

And it almost feels like the seeds of still another project may have been planted....................

Nice one: model it and put it on the Cold War SIG stand....

EDIT: there are pics of them on the web: do a Google image search on "belgian decoy f-84".

I feel like a dummy, 'cause I do know better and just now looked them up. As a whif, very simple; the fin doesn't even need much to build it up, just some card added to it. Not so sure about the camo, 'cause I'm not very good at camo schemese. But the intakes, nothing to 'em, just more card, and the nose could either be fashioned of card into a cone, or taken off something else, an old Starfighter kit, perhaps.

.... or an old Mirage kit?  ;D

Here's a pic off the Net.

i can explain this one

its called the "Thundermirage", it combines retired F-84F's with the wings, tail and nose from the Mirage 5.
they were mostly used during the cold war as decoys to fool Soviet Inteligence.

in the early/mid 90's they were used as targets on the Pampa Shooting range near Hechtel.
on the bench:

-all kinds of things.

Second that!   Thanks a lot for posting that pic.

Looks like someone from here had tinkered it together... Don't I have a F-84F somewhere?
