I thought of flipping the 747 over so the engines are on top. Still haven't made up my mind to stick with the jets or change them for props .
Do I hinge the nose or go for camshell doors?

Considering the fuselage at the front is egg-shaped, flipping the whole thing isn't the way to go IMHO, you will need the widest point at the bottom to make the planing surface as wide as possible (it would have a lot of weight to support). I wouldn't flip the wings over either but just move them from the bottom to the top, depending on what version of the 747 you using for a base (100/200 or 300) I would make a new wing box just behind the upper deck fairing and angle the wings downwards.

A comparison between a 747 and a C-5 in 1/72 scale:

Some time ago I picked up a set of floats to make a flying boat out of them, here's a pic of one of them next to a 1/72 C-130

It's ironic ,I'm building a 1/72 Airfix C-130. I've cut down the fuselage of the Revell 1/72 Be-6 flying boat 'Madge' and changing the wings. (Wings used on the EC-69 AEW project ).The new wings are from a Airfix BAe Nimrod.

a B747 flying boat is an amazingly great idea, please go on!

You don't realize how big a 747 is until you see it overlaid on a set of Galaxy plans ! What scale are the feet ?

The floats must be for an RC cub or somat ? Great idea tho !

I did get them from an RC store, whether they're for a Cub or not I couldn't say though.  It works quite well for a 1/72 C-17 flying boat ----  ;)

I'm thinking the Sultan of Brunei would love to have one as his personal jet. Just picture the faces of all the other Arab Sheiks when the Sultan lands in the Gulf on the Qatar waterfront for the next OPEC meeting. Of course the trick will be figuring out how to off-load a gold flaked Rolls Royce for the trips around town.

Why bother?  He could just send it ahead on his personal An-124...  ;D ;D

Or he could have it delivered direct to the waterfront by Rolls-Royce and let it be their problem to get it to Qatar.

Had a look at the Revell C-17 1/144  kit and the Frog 1/96 wings off the DH comet 4 do fit. They are almost the same size. There is an outer and inner shell with lots of detail . I'm sure that a fellow Whiffer could build the sea plane version but I'll stick to my version of the AW 802.
I will add the C-17 wings to the comet and source out a stand.

Received the Revell 1/144 Boeing 747-123 "Space Shuttle Carrier Aircraft 905". The shoulder mounted wing conversion would take a lot of work but moving the wings upto the window line would be a better option. The engines could be fitted above the wings either "Skyfall" or four pylon method. Could use the sponsors from the 1/72 Italeri Sea Dragon MH-53E to form something similar to the Boeing seaplane clipped layout with a T-tail. Will have a look at the B-47 engines to see if they fit or the engines from a 1/144 B-52.

I'm pretty sure my Grandfather had a set for his Cub....sadly gone now

Runway ? ...

I've absolutely no idea how this unsticks

I just thought I'd bring a low wing amphibian to the discussion.

PR19_Kit

That's a baby ekranoplan so it doesn't 'unstick' very far.....
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

...and I'm not a closeted 'Take That' fan, I'm a REAL fan! :)

Nope, service ceiling is 5,000 meters and while it does take advantge of ground effect, it is not designed to operate solely in
that flight regime.

Been comparing the B747 with the BV222 Wiking the nose is very similar. Got a pair of Vulcan wings, thought of kitbashing them and having the engines mounted above the wings.
