Scaling a D-2/XF-11

I've already done the math on the idea of scaling a D-2, XF-11 or some kind of hybridded design down 68.3636... scale

The idea was based around the following

  • The R-4360 which powers the XF-11 was 55" in diameter
  • The V-1710 was 37.6 in width or height
.
You'd have a design similar to the P-38 except it would be more streamlined I guess and possibly better at altitude: The baseline concept revolved around either averaging the D-2/XF-11's wingspan and length or just the wingspan.

BTW: I have seen very few pictures on the D-2 design (only a drawing actually). The canopy appears a bit larger which might scale down better though to be honest I could use some pictures or diagrams.
That being said, I'd like to remind everybody in a manner reminiscent of the SNL bit on Julian Assange, that no matter how I die: It was murder (even if there was a suicide note or a video of me peacefully dying in my sleep); should I be framed for a criminal offense or disappear, you know to blame.

Although you seem to prefer V-engines, perhaps you should consider a twin Pratt and Whitney R-2800 -a fit would likely work quite well for an aircraft that size.  Yes a slightly wider engine, but excellent power.

I selected an inline in this case because the basic idea revolved around scaling the design down and that depended on something skinny.  When I did the math I found the width of the V-1710 divided against the R-4360 to produce a scale that was around the same as the P-38.

This engine;

was specifically designed to fit inside a wing chord so all that protruded forward was a small housing holding a spinner and prop.
If I'm not building models, I'm out riding my dirtbike

The D-2 was not the XF-11, and was most likely smaller than the latter.

The D-2 was one proposed to use the R-2160.

Good luck finding a drawing of the D-2.

A variety of stuff here: http://www.secretprojects.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,5974.0/all.html
including scans of L G Halls large 1/10 scale drawings of the XF-11, which include a smaller scale
4-view of the D-2 (I used to have a copy of the drawing set in 1/48th but passed them along to a
friend who wants to scratch build an XF-11 in 1/48th).

Maybe not as difficult as I thought!

Yeah, I should punch up the figures I came up with as a reference point...

Should I take this from the Idea Bank to the Aircraft, Ships & Weapons by Topic?  Or the Art forum?
