How about a fleet of smaller aircraft (Skyvan, Airvan, Nomad etc...) each equipped with a few miniguns and or a Howitzer to fly in a circle following each other and deliver a cone of concentrated fire from multiple directions?

That's an evil idea. The risk would be collisions, but I'm sure some avionics-based solution could be found.

If you've got air superiority then why not use a Gunblimp?

You could float over the enemy for as long as you wanted.  Resupply by chopper maybe?

Time to get to target may be a issue, not to mention recoil vs buoyancy. ;D

I'm now sitting here giggling at the thought of a Gunblimp bouncing backwards out of view as it fires it's 105mm gun.
I suppose you could drop anchor before opening fire?

If it had a large number of gatlings then as well as going backwards when it fired it would also rise as at it rapidly got lighter.

Shame.  I quite liked the idea.

In the proto-steampunk book The Warlord of the Air by Michael Moorcock, heavier-than-air craft had never been developed, and majestic fleets of airships did battle with large-calibre recoilless cannons.

Ah yes.  The Oswald Bastable Trilogy consisting of the Warlord of The Air, The Land Leviathan and The Steel Tsar.
I have them and must re-read them.  Catherine Cornelius and Una Persson make an appearance IIRC but then that's usual with Moorcock's intermeshing characters and story lines.
